Darren and I are very excited about our trip to the Greek Islands! We leave this Saturday September 1st 2012 and will be gone for 8 days. This trip has been in the works for quite some time but with the date fast approaching it seems like it is now finally official! You'll have to excuse the lack of online communication for the next week and a half as I will be enjoying the experience of a lifetime.
As the Greek Islands are quite the popular tourist location I thought it might be fun to share with you a simple version of our itinerary. Here is what our 8 day adventure will look like ......
DAY 1:
The first day is usually the second worst day of the trip (after the last day) because we will be taking a total of three flights to get to our final destination. A total of 15.5 hours of travel and layover. BUT at least we will be incredibly excited and have the rest of our trip to look forward to!
DAY 2:
On the second day we will arrive in Chania, Crete.
The city of Chania is gorgeous all on its own but we also plan to visit the nearby ancient site of Aptera.
After a long day of travel and exploring we are staying in our much anticipated traditional hotel!
DAY 3:
On the third day we will be travelling to Heraklion by bus.
As you can see Heraklion is absolutely breathtaking! We cannot wait to explore the capital of Crete and visit the nearby ancient site of Knossos Palace.
DAY 4:
On the fourth day of our trip we say "goodbye" to the island of Crete and travel by speed ferry to the island of Santorini! Though I am incredibly excited to see every single thing we've planned for, I am over the moon excited for Santorini! The reason for this is because I have painted a large painting of Oia, Santorini entitled "Saint Irene's Atlantis" and cannot wait to fully connect with the location.
While in Santorini we are stationing ourselves at a gorgeous hotel in the capital city of Fira.
We will also be going on a journey to experience the amazing Ancient Akrotiri which many believe to be the lost city of Atlantis.
DAY 5:
The fifth day of our adventure involves us taking another journey out of Fira to Ancient Thera.
After this we will be travelling to Oia to have dinner and watch the most beautiful sunset in the world. This, as mentioned before, will be the most exciting moment for me.
And here, just in case you were curious, is my painting of this beautiful Greek city!
DAY 6:
On the sixth day we take another speed ferry to the island of Mykonos! Here we are hoping to experience, not only culture and history, but a bit of nightlife as well. Mykonos is famous for it's clubs and nights to remember.
In Mykonos we have a luxurious hotel waiting for us. We usually travel modestly and prefer to experience more traditional hotels, but for our last Greek Island experience we felt a little pampering was in order.
From our hotel all of the sites can be seen and easily walked to. We plan on seeing the famous windmills, Little Venice, and the Church of Panagia Paraportiani.
DAY 7:
On the last day of our trip we will be taking a boat ride to the nearby island of Delos. Delos is one of the most important mythological, historical, and archaeological sites in Greece. It is currently uninhabited but at one point was the New York city of the Greek Islands. Actually, Mykonos only become populated due to its proximity to Delos. I cannot wait!
DAY 8:
With all of the excitement and adventure behind us the eighth day of our trip will be a tedious one. Before reaching our home destination we will have to endure 18 hours of flights and layovers. But, it will have all been worth it!
I am an avid world traveller and love to incorporate my travel experiences into my art! If you have any commission requests that involve travel please do not hesitate to contact me at Info@MalindaPrudhomme.com.
Wow.... looks very exciting!! I can't wait to see your pictures! :)
